State police's struggle with a man accused of drunken driving on Tuesday night ended with the use of a Taser.

John E. Nolan, 41, of Richmond, is charged with driving under the influence (fourth offense), driving on a DUI-suspended license, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container, resisting arrest, menacing and failure to show proof of insurance.

State police trooper Mike Hamblin found Nolan behind the wheel of a car that had crashed on Hal Rogers Parkway, about 4 miles east of London, on Tuesday night.

While helping Nolan out of the car, Hamblin noticed "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" coming from Nolan, according to a news release from state police.

When Hamblin asked Nolan to take a field sobriety test, Nolan spit at the officer and grabbed him, leading to a brief struggle during which the officer used his Taser, "at which time Nolan became compliant with officer commands," the release said.

Nolan was lodged in the Laurel County jail.
