Thursday's memorial service for former Kentucky gubernatorial candidate Gatewood Galbraith will include tributes from public officials, a candlelight vigil and an opportunity to help the homeless.

Lexington Mayor Jim Gray and U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Versailles, are among those scheduled to speak at the ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning, 251 West Second Street in Lexington.

After the ceremony, people who have thoughts or stories about Mr. Galbraith are invited to share them with oral historians from the University of Kentucky.

Music will be provided by Rodney Hatfield and The Other Brothers. There will be a candlelight vigil at Gratz Park.

Mr. Galbraith, an attorney, was known as a champion for the homeless. He was also known for his fedora. Jessica Mohler, a spokeswoman for the Carnegie Center, said people are encouraged to bring a hat that can be donated to residents of Lexington's Hope Center, which provides services to the homeless.

Mr. Galbraith died Jan. 4 after developing pneumonia complicated by chronic emphysema.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning and the Hope Center.
