FRANKFORT — Newport Central Catholic epitomized its nickname in Wednesday's opening round of the girls' Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic at the Frankfort Convention Center.

The Thoroughbreds led wire-to-wire in a 69-32 thrashing of Owsley County.

Nicole Kiernan, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, personally outscored the Owls 10-5 to start the game.

With a 12-7 lead, the 'Breds went on a 14-0 run to open a 19-point lead in the first quarter.

Owsley lost the ball on seven consecutive possessions during the run, leading to layup after layup. That was part of a 22-turnover day that led to 28 NewCath points.

"I felt like we were a better team," NewCath Coach Ron Dawn said. "And the more you let a team hang around with you, the more confidence they get, and sometimes you have a tendency to tighten up. So it was good to jump out on them early."

Kiernan finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Jamie Kohls, a 5-9 senior, added 14 points. Aubrey Muench totaled eight points, six assists and four steals.

The winners won without benefit of a three-point goal.

NewCath (12-4) won the All "A" in 2010 and reached the semifinals last year. The Thoroughbreds will meet Green County in Friday's quarterfinals.

Owsley (12-7) got 13 points, 14 rebounds, two assists and four blocks from Peyton Wright, a 5-8 senior.

The Owls shot 3-for-20 in the second half and were 12-for-43 (27.9 percent) overall.

Louisville Holy Cross 48, Raceland 35: The Lady Cougars scored 25 points off of 23 turnovers and outscored the Lady Rams 18-8 in the paint.

Sydney Morabito hit three three-pointers en route to scoring 17 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.

Maya Hardin had eight points, four assists and three steals for the Cougars (18-3).

Raceland (13-7) was led by Micah Leslie, who shot 5-for-8 from three-point range to rack up 15 points. The Rams' Brooke Gee grabbed 10 rebounds, to go with six points.

Trailing 22-14 at halftime, Raceland got back-to-back threes by Leslie to pull to within 22-20.

That's as close as it got, though, and Holy Cross led by as many as 15 down the stretch.

Bishop Brossart 54, Harlan 31: The Lady Stangs went from outhouse to penthouse in 16 minutes, trading places with Harlan.

Harlan led 21-11 after Brossart shot 15.8 percent (3-for-19) in the first half.

Brossart (18-3) scored the first 12 points of the second half, then blew the game open by finishing with a 21-1 run.

Harlan was held to six points in the third quarter and four in the fourth.

Sarah Futscher, a 6-foot sophomore, scored four to fuel the 12-0 run. She added five in the game-ending flurry, while Madison Eisenman scored eight of her 10 points in the last 4:36.

Futscher finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Eisenman had five steals and helped Brossart outscore Harlan's bench 21-2.

After the miserable first half, Brossart shot 54.2 percent (13-for-24) in the second half.

Harlan made 45.5 percent (10-for-22) the first half, 18.8 (3-for-16) the rest of the way.

The Dragons (14-7) also had more than twice as many turnovers as the Stangs, 31-14, and were outscored 19-2 at the free-throw line.

Harlan's Ashley Mullins notched 16 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

Owensboro Catholic 41, Murray 40: Leah Greathouse scored 12 points and Destiny Howard pulled down 12 rebounds as Owensboro Catholic edged Murray in a game with eight lead changes.

Murray got a game-high 18 points from Janssen Starks.

The teams' shooting percentages were nearly identical but Catholic outrebounded Murray 32-24. The losers kept it close by hitting 12 of 15 free throws.

Magoffin County 75. University Heights 67: Jamie Castle scored 26 points as Magoffin held off University Heights. Magoffin built on its six-point halftime lead with a big bulge, 28-14, in the third quarter. UHA's 23-11 advantage in the fourth quarter wasn't enough.

UHA outshot Magoffin 57 percent to 42 percent but turned the ball over more, 27-16.

The losers got 24 points from Denayia Holmes and 17 from Dannika Prater.

Walton-Verona 82, Kentucky Country Day 41: In a battle of Bearcats, the Northern Kentucky school doubled up the Louisville school.

Kara Taulbee led Walton-Verona with 25 points and Katie Slavey had 17. Selbi Hendricks had 21 for the losers.

Country Day turned the ball over 31 times, while Walton-Verona lost it only nine times
