There’s no question what game will be the featured attraction in the first round of the PNC/KHSAA Boys’ State Basketball Tournament in Rupp Arena this March.

The Louisville-area regions — the 6th and 7th — were matched up against each other in the Sweet Sixteen draw that was held Friday.

Not since 1990 have those regions met in the first round.

The 7th Region includes No. 1 Trinity, No. 3 Ballard and No. 9 Manual. The 6th Region includes No. 4 Pleasure Ridge Park, No. 5 Bullitt East, No. 7 Moore and No. 8 Jeffersontown.

The 11th Region, which is home to No. 2 Scott County, No. 6 Madison Central and the Lexington schools, is matched against the 1st Region, whose highest-rated team is No. 18 Marshall County.

If the favorites make it to Rupp Arena and the tournament plays out according to ratings, the semifinals would be No. 13 Southwestern vs. No. 1 Trinity, and No. 10 Bowling Green vs. No. 2 Scott County.

Recent history has shown, however, that the Sweet Sixteen isn’t kind to all favorites.
