A crowd of 137 people — from babies to senior citizens — gathered in Duthie Auditorium at Midway College on Sunday to watch and listen to the African continent come to life in a presentation of African Folktales.

Some in the audience actually became on-stage participants in the presentation, which included performances of several folktales from various parts of Africa by the Bright Star Touring Theatre, a nationally known theater group. Brightly costumed characters, including some representing animals native to Africa, filled the stage.

"It went very well," said Becky Watson, youth services librarian with the Woodford County Library.

Sunday's presentation was the sixth in the Woodford County Library's Lottie M. White Children's Program Series, she said.

White, who died in 1994, was a longtime Woodford County resident who cared for former Kentucky First Lady Libby Jones when she was a child.

The Midway Branch Library received a $7,500 donation to fund the series in 2010. The donation was given to Midway's library after the City of Midway purchased property owned by White for an urban-renewal and community-development project.
