Senior pitcher and designated player Rachel Riley was the University of Kentucky's lone selection to the All-Southeastern Conference pre-season team announced Tuesday.
This marks the first such honor for UK's captain from Bowling Green.
The 13-player team, selected by the league's coaches, included four players each from Alabama and Tennessee, three from Florida, one from Auburn and one from Kentucky.
Riley set career highs in pitching victories (13) and batting average (.354) last season in helping lead the Wildcats to a 40-win season and the school's first appearance in a super regional. She has earned pitching victories over eight top-10-ranked opponents during her career.
"It is nice to see Riley receive recognition up to this point in her career for all of her work both on the mound and in the box," UK Coach Rachel Lawson said. "We are hoping for big things from her and the rest of her teammates as we embark on our 2012 season."
In assembling a 12-player team at minimum, each SEC head coach voted for four infielders, two pitchers, one catcher and one utility/designated player. Ties in the voting were not broken
Riley is the third Wildcat to earn All-SEC honors in the five years the coaches have selected a team, joining Megan Yocke in 2011 and Molly Johnson in 2010 and 2009.
