A Jackson County woman died Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Ky. 421 in Madison County, Kentucky State Police said.

The wreck occurred about 9:25 a.m., troopers said.

According to police reports, Betty J. Smith, 53, of McKee, was driving north on Ky. 421 when her 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse ran off the right shoulder of the highway. Smith overcorrected, police said, crossing the center line to collide with a 2012 Chevy Equinox driven by Gregory Hackworth, 49, of Irvine.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison.

Hackworth was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital, where he was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon.

An investigation continues.
