GEORGETOWN — Georgetown used "Double D" Thursday night to pull away to a 74-49 Mid-South Conference men's basketball victory over Pikeville.
Determination and defense.
No. 20 Pikeville, the reigning NAIA champion, was held to 26.3 percent shooting (15-for-57).
No. 12 Georgetown, a Final Four team last season, snapped a two-game losing streak.
"Our guys were dialed in and focused," Tigers Coach Chris Briggs said. "Obviously upset with the last couple games we played — close losses (in overtime to St. Catharine and by three points to Campbellsville), where we need to be able to tough those out on the road.
"They were focused and they came in here, they listened to the scouting report that Coach (James) Jackson gave them that was dead on. ... I'm proud of them."
Garel Craig led Georgetown's attack with 17 points and five assists.
In contrast to the Bears, Georgetown (18-5, 8-3 Mid-South) shot well — 32-for-63, 50.8 percent.
Allan Thomas added 14 points, Jordan Demercy had 13 and Aaron Morris got 11.
Josh Lockett came off the bench to total eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Pikeville (14-8, 6-5) was led by Trevor Setty, who scored 19 in 25 rough minutes. Shane Burrell had 13 points and eight rebounds.
The game turned two-thirds of the way through the first half, when Setty picked up an offensive foul, his second. He then protested and had a technical added — his third foul.
Setty went to the bench with nine points and the Bears trailing 16-15.
Georgetown capitalized with a 16-4 run to lead 32-19, and it was 32-21 at intermission.
"He was blistering hot right there and he was rolling," Briggs said. "I didn't see what happened. That was definitely a turning point. He's a heck of a player. ... We told our guys if we could make him take a lot of shots to get his points, we'd be OK. He took 12 and got 19. That's not too bad. We didn't want him to take 12 and get 28."
Setty did climb two spots, to No. 22, on Pikeville's career scoring list.
The 6-foot-8 junior from Mason County has 1,101 career points.
Pikeville never came closer than 10 in the second half.
The Tigers used a pair of 8-0 runs to push out to leads of 49-30 and 59-35.
The Bears simply couldn't find the basket, shooting 22.6 percent (7-for-31) in the second half.
"That's awesome right there," Briggs said. "Our goal is 39, and to get 26 (overall) against a team like Pikeville, that's really guarding. That's a heck of a job by our guys. Put them on the foul line too many times, but I'll look at the positives and just enjoy this one tonight and get ready for Saturday (vs. Virginia-Wise)."
Pikeville did get to the foul line 31 times, but ended the game by missing its last eight chances.
Georgetown also won the early-season meeting at Pike-ville, 86-84.
Women
No. 18 Georgetown 66, Pike-ville 51: Andrea Howard scored 15 points and Jessica Waddle had 13 as the Lady Tigers completed a season sweep.
Georgetown (16-7, 8-3) also got eight points and 13 rebounds from Lizza Jonas, while Devon Golden had two points to go with 14 caroms.
Pikeville (4-19, 0-11) lost its 12th in a row.
Brogan Conley led the Bears with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Whitney Belle Jackson had 10 points and four boards, but fouled out in 20 minutes of play.
