Louisville's Strong promotes Watson to offensive coordinator

Louisville Coach Charlie Strong said Monday he's elevated Shawn Watson to offensive coordinator and hired Sherrone Moore to coach tight ends.

Strong also announced Monday that offensive line coach Dave Borberly will be the running-game coordinator.

Watson served as quarterbacks coach last season and took over play-calling duties four games into the season. He's replacing Mike Sanford, who left the staff six games into the season.

Before joining Louisville, Watson was the offensive coordinator at Nebraska for four years. Moore spent the last three years as an offensive graduate assistant at Louisville and focused on coaching with tight ends midway through last season. Moore played collegiately at Oklahoma before joining the Cardinals' staff.

■ University of Wisconsin campus police have opened an investigation into new misconduct allegations against a former top athletics official who resigned after he was accused of sexually assaulting a student at a Rose Bowl party.

University Chancellor David Ward released a statement Monday saying campus police have been investigating new allegations against former associate athletics director John Chadima since Jan. 30. Ward didn't specify what Chadima might have done. The statement said the accusations come from a man and police will continue to investigate all allegations of "sexual impropriety or abuse of power brought to their attention."

The man doesn't want to press charges, Ward said, but police have decided that the man's story is credible. The man came forward after the Rose Bowl accusations surfaced.

■ Authorities in Clinton, S.C., said Monday that a Presbyterian College football player died after he stopped breathing due to alcohol intoxication. Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols said Monday he has ruled the death of 21-year-old Kyle Allen accidental. A student found Allen unconscious in a fraternity house early Sunday. Allen was pronounced dead at a hospital. The linebacker transferred from Georgia Southern in 2010 and was redshirted. The business administration major played in all 11 games in 2011.

Contador's ban saddens fellow racers

Eddy Merckx wonders whether someone is trying to "kill cycling."

The cycling great deplored the decision Monday to strip Alberto Contador of his 2010 Tour de France title and uphold a two-year ban for doping. The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Contador's claim that his positive test for clenbuterol was caused by eating contaminated meat. The Spaniard, who also won cycling's premier race in 2007 and 2009, joined Floyd Landis as the only riders to lose a Tour title.

"It's very bad for cycling. It's bad for everybody," Merckx, a five-time Tour de France winner, told The Associated Press. "I'm very surprised, very surprised."

Contador said he ate tainted beef on a Tour rest day. The top court in international sports called that "unlikely," saying the result was more likely caused by the "ingestion of a contaminated food supplement."

Contador has been banned until Aug. 6 with all his results since Jan. 25, 2011, erased, including his Giro d'Italia victory last May. He is ineligible for this year's Tour, Giro and the London Olympics.

Andy Schleck, who finished 39 seconds behind Contador in the 2010 Tour, is now in line to become that year's champion. "I feel sad for Alberto. I always believed in his innocence," Schleck said.

Rockies fill hole in rotation with Guthrie

The Colorado Rockies acquired veteran right-hander Jeremy Guthrie from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, a move that bolsters their young rotation.

In exchange, the Rockies sent reliever Matt Lindstrom and right-hander Jason Hammel to the Orioles.

Guthrie, the Orioles' opening-day starter three of the last four seasons, lost 17 games last season, the most in the American League, and finished with a 4.33 ERA. Guthrie, who turns 33 in April, agreed to a one-year, $8.2 million contract with the Rockies.

■ The Nationals have agreed to a minor-league contract with outfielder Rick Ankiel. If added to the 40-man roster, Ankiel would have a $1.25 million, one-year contract. Ankiel, 32, batted .239 with nine home runs and 37 RBI in 122 games last season with Washington.

■ The Seattle Mariners have agreed to a $750,000, one-year contract with Shawn Camp and a $500,000, one-year deal with Hong-Chih Kuo in an attempt to add bullpen depth.

Kuo was an All-Star in 2010 with the Dodgers but struggled with a back problem early last season and missed a month with anxiety disorder. Camp led Toronto with 67 appearances last year and was 6-3 with a 4.21 ERA.

Four wounded in fan violence in Brazil

Four Botafogo fans were wounded by gunshots after the team's game against Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro during a weekend marked by violence between rival supporters and police across Brazil.

Authorities in Rio said the four fans' injuries were not life-threatening. Dozens of other soccer supporters also were injured or detained at other venues on Sunday in clashes between rival fans and fights between hooligans and police.

■ Bob Bradley insisted he is "totally committed" to coaching Egypt's national team despite the turmoil in the country following the riot at a game last week that left more than 70 dead.

The federation president who hired Bradley last year and his board were dismissed by the prime minister in the aftermath of Wednesday's rampage. But Bradley, a former U.S. national team coach, is sure he will lead Egypt into African Cup of Nations qualifying. "When a tragedy like this occurs, it's important that people can come together and can be strong," Bradley said.

Beau Reid, a semidiplomatic member of Nebraska basketball's booster club, on the job security of Coach Doc Sadler, who is 33-58 in conference games in his six seasons with the Cornhuskers:

"I hate speculating on someone's job, their livelihood. But if you decide he's not going to get the job done, you have to pull the trigger this year."

And Reid on Sadler's job in recruiting:

"Not taking anything away from the kids who are there now, but it just seems like our talent level isn't equal to the remainder of the conference."
