Order a singing valentine for your loved one this Valentine's Day and help out a cause in the process.
For $25, employees of Bluegrass Care & Rehab will serenade the person of your choice (in Lexington only) and present them with a rose and candy. Songs range from sweetheart ballads to songs of thanks and appreciation.

Conference for grandparents
The 10th annual conference for grandparents and relatives raising children will be March 15 at the Clarion Hotel. Grandparents, caregivers, relatives and professionals are invited to attend. The conference includes 13 workshops, lunch, exhibits, and free legal consultations for relative caregivers. Joseph Crumbley, a national kinship expert, is the keynote and featured speaker. The conference is $5 for grandparents/relatives and $50 for professionals. Space is limited and the registration deadline is March 1. The award, now in its ninth year, is for individuals who have demonstrated their dedication to improving the health of Lexington residents.
Criteria for the selection of the Public Health Heroes Award include: exemplary leadership and diligence in promoting public health; remarkable contributions and support in fostering public health programs; and work or actions that have affected the community's health in a positive way and would not have occurred without the activities of the nominee.
To nominate an individual, provide the following information: name, professional title and organization; phone number and email address of nominee; and examples of why the person is worthy of the award. Descriptions should be no more than 200 words.

Salon services benefit The Nest
Kendall's Salon will hold a benefit for The Nest, Center for Women, Children & Families on Saturday and Sunday. The salon will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday to provide a full range of services at regular prices: hair cuts, style and color, pedicures, manicures, waxes, makeup and massage. The Nest will receive 50 percent of the days' proceeds.
The Nest, Center for Women, Children and Families is a non-profit Lexington-based social service agency that provides a safe, accessible and healing environment for children, while developing the strength and self-sufficiency of women and families through education, support, counseling and advocacy.

Free help for filing taxes
Transylvania University accounting students will assist taxpayers with an income of $50,000 or less in the preparation of Internal Revenue Service income tax forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ and the Kentucky form 740. The service is free. All forms will be filed electronically.
Student volunteers will be available 3 to 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday in February on the first floor of Transylvania's Cowgill Center for Business, Economics and Education on Third Street. Taxpayers will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Transylvania accounting students who have completed an income tax preparation training program will work under the supervision of accounting professors to aid taxpayers.
Individuals interested in this free service should bring with them all of the necessary information including: their W2s, 1099s (interest income), state and federal tax returns from last year, the IRS forms received in the mail and the birth dates and social security numbers for any dependents.
