Phil Burchell won the community chili cook-off Jan. 30 at Midway Christian Church. Each month, the church hosts a free community dinner, and a chili cook-off was chosen as the theme for January's dinner. Twenty-eight pots of chili were entered for judging, and 175 people attended the dinner.
Ron Guzesky took second place, and Jim Wombles took third. The judges were Midway Mayor Tom Bozarth, Versailles Assistant Police Chief Jimmy Fugate, and Northside Elementary School Principal Ryan Asher.
Twelve file for six Midway council seats
Twelve candidates have filed for the six seats on the Midway City Council in the November election, including incumbents Aaron Hamilton, Doris Leigh, Dan Roller and Sharon Turner.
Midway City Council members serve two-year terms. The offices are non-partisan, but if 13 or more candidates had filed for the six seats, a primary would have been held in May to reduce the field to 12.
Others who filed their candidacy petitions and campaign-finance papers with Woodford County Clerk Judie Woolums were Michael Ashton, Steven Craig, Sara Hicks, Kevin Locke, Steve Simoff, Bruce Southworth, Grayson Vandegrift and Libby Warfield.
The seat left vacant by former mayor and council member Rebecca Moore's resignation is open for nominations to fill the unexpired term. Letters of nomination must be received at City Hall by Feb. 15. State law gives the council until Feb. 29 to name a replacement, or the government will appoint someone to fill the vacancy. The selection by the city council is planned for Feb. 20.
