The cases of a Lexington mother and her boyfriend who are accused of child abuse were waived to a grand jury at a hearing in Fayette District Court Wednesday.

Attorneys for Jennifer Saunders and Dustin Watson asked that their cases be waived without hearing testimony from police officers. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Police have said Watson was watching Saunders' 11-month-old child while Saunders was at work Jan. 31 when the child was shaken and severely injured. The infant had a black eye, retinal hemorrhaging in both eyes and frontal lobe hemorrhaging, and bruises on her body.

According to an arrest warrant, Saunders failed to take the child to the hospital until the next morning despite the severe injuries. The child was not eating and was vomiting, the warrant said.

Public defender Bonnie Potter, who represents Saunders, said evidence will show that Saunders is not guilty and had nothing to do with the child's injuries.

"She was not at home when the child was injured," she said. "She loves her children and she took the child to get medical attention."

Public defender Chad Butcher, who represents Watson, said he could not comment on the case until he saw more evidence.

Fayette District Court Judge T. Bruce Bell reduced the bond for Saunders under the condition that she have no contact with her daughter, who is in the custody of her biological father. Bell denied a bond reduction for Watson, saying he was "a danger to others" and had been deemed a high flight risk.
