A parents guide to select new movies:

'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island'

Rating: PG for some adventure action, and brief mild language

What it's about: The kid from Journey to the Center of the Earth drags his stepdad and others on a quest in search of the island his grandpa disappeared onto.

The Kid Attractor Factor: Vanessa Hudgens, Kentucky native Josh Hutcherson and Dwayne Johnson trying to escape giant lizards, ravenous birds and a volcano, in 3-D.

Good lessons/bad lessons: There's nothing cooler than cracking a code.

Violence: Fantastical, rarely life-threatening.

Language: Disney clean.

Sex: A smooch, and Dwayne Johnson and Vanessa Hudgens compete to see who can wear the tightest shirts.

Drugs and alcohol: None.

Parents' advisory: As action adventures go, this one skews 12 and younger. Suitable for all ages.

'The Woman in Black'

Rating: PG-13 for thematic material and violence/disturbing images

What it's about: A grieving young lawyer faces the supernatural while settling accounts at an old haunted house in 1920s Britain.

The Kid Attractor Factor: Daniel Radcliffe chasing ghosts.

Good lessons/bad lessons: There's no point in trying to reason with the undead.

Violence: Children die, grownups hang themselves.

Language: A teensy bit of mild profanity.

Sex: None.

Drugs and alcohol: A spot of brandy, a nip of whiskey.

Parents' advisory: Small children are likely to have a few nightmares after seeing this. Suitable for 11 and older.
