The Lexington Herald-Leader's front-page nameplate, in frosting, as done by Caramanda's Bake Shoppe in Lexington.

The Herald-Leader's front page nameplate was especially delicious in Thursday's newspaper.

Caramanda's Bake Shoppe in Lexington created the nameplate entirely in cake icing as part of a Life + Food section story about types of frosting for Valentine's Day goodies. Here's how the shop did it:

Steve Henderson of Caramanda's Bake Shoppe said a buttercream transfer process was used to create the words The Herald-Leader in icing.

A piece of parchment paper was placed over the newspaper's name. With a piping bag filled with buttercream icing, the words and letters were traced. Then, the icing was frozen and transferred to the top of a cake where it was surrounded by white buttercream icing.

"It looks perfectly smooth because what you see on the top of the cake is the reverse side of the icing, the side that was against the parchment paper," Henderson explained.
