A Laurel County homeowner shot an intruder during an alleged burglary on Thursday, Sheriff John Root said in a news release.

The homeowner, Bobby Lee, and his daughter, a toddler, were asleep at their home 7 miles south of London just before 12:30 p.m., when Lee was awakened by the sound of someone in the bedroom, according to Root's office.

Lee saw a man going through some jewelry, said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo Jr., spokesman for Root's office.

Lee shot the intruder in the upper chest with a pistol, then held the man and two other suspects at gunpoint until police arrived, Acciardo said.

The man who was shot, 31-year-old Jimmy Farmer of Corbin, was treated at Saint Joseph Hospital — London, then jailed on a charge of second-degree burglary and theft. Dudley Farmer, 25, of London, and Leslie Hicks, 31, of McDowell were arrested on the same charges.
