No. 4 Scott County didn't shoot well and was plagued by foul trouble, but it still managed to hold off No. 10 Lexington Catholic 70-61 in boys' basketball Saturday night.

How did the host Cardinals do it?

Their defense forced Lexington Catholic into 21 turnovers and converted them into 26 points.

On the flip side, Scott County had only six turnovers that the Knights turned into zilch.

"That was the big difference," Cards Coach Billy Hicks said. "We handled their press pretty well and took care of the ball, and we got some points off their turnovers.

"It's good to know going into tournament time that we can have a night where we're not shooting the ball well but still find a way to win."

Sophomore sharpshooter Trent Gilbert led Scott County with 22 points. He hit six three-pointers, including one just before halftime that gave the Cards a 36-34 lead.

The Cards never trailed again.

Isaiah Ivey had 16 points and five rebounds for the winners. Tamron Manning had 12 points and five rebounds, and Josh Harris added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Lexington Catholic was led by 6-foot-9 junior Jack Whitman, who was under the weather but looked fairly robust in scoring 23 points and snagging 15 rebounds.

"He's really a load in there," Hicks said. "We tried to limit his touches, but whenever he got it, he scored."

Patrick Keller had 13 points and five rebounds, and Craig Floyd added 11 points and five rebounds.

Scott County and Lexington Catholic have had one of the best rivalries in recent years. They've met 22 times, and each side has 11 wins.

Last year Scott County won the regular-season meeting in mid-February, but Lexington Catholic got its revenge by beating the Cards in the first round of the region tournament.
