A 13-year-old boy who suffered severe head trauma in a saucer sled crash had improved to fair condition by Monday.

The boy, who was being treated at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, was initially listed in critical condition after the crash on Friday.

The saucer sled on which the boy was riding slammed into a tree Friday night, said Harrison County Sheriff Bruce Hampton, who would not identify the boy.

The accident happened shortly before 7 p.m. as the boy was riding a saucer sled pulled by an all-terrain vehicle operated by another 13-year-old, Hampton said.

"They were spinning around and around, and he hit a tree head-on," Hampton said.

The incident happened on McDowell Road about 10 miles east of Cynthiana.
