More than 400 people are expected to turn out at Texas Roadhouse, 3029 Richmond Road, on Saturday for the 13th Polar Plunge to raise money for Special Olympics.
The event's traditional opening ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., with the first plungers hitting the water about 30 minutes later.
Plunge participants who have committed to raise a minimum of $75 ($50 for plungers younger than 18) will take a chilly dip into a pool to help support Special Olympics.
Participants may pick up brochures at Texas Roadhouse or call Special Olympics Kentucky at 1-800-633-7403. They also may register at Soky.kintera.org/2012lexingtonplunge, create a Web page and raise money through the official Polar Plunge Web site. Participants may register as individuals or as a team of friends, family or co-workers.
Pre-registration will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. On-site registration will open at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The actual plunge is only part of the event. Plungers are encouraged to wear costumes and stay for the after-plunge party.
Painting lesson part of fund-raiser
Painting With a Twist studio will hold a special Painting With a Purpose event Sunday to raise money for the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.
The cost is $45, and attendees will receive painting instructions from a local artist, refreshments and a special gift from Vera Bradley. There also will be a small silent auction.

Charities invited to apply for money
Local charities that promote the arts and humanities are invited to apply to be one of this year's Beaux Arts Foundation beneficiaries.
The foundation raises money for Lexington charities through promotion of the arts with events such as the Beaux Arts Ball, founded in 1969.
This year's ball will be in April, and the money raised will be distributed to charities.

Selected charities will be announced Feb. 24.
