Bell County's girls basketball team, which trailed by one early in the fourth quarter, outscored Middlesboro 29-13 in the period to pull away for a 65-48 victory Monday in the 52nd District tournament at Harlan County.
"I think, at times, we got a little relaxed, and Middlesboro kept coming," Bell County Coach David Teague said. "We played well the fourth quarter, and the big thing was, we attacked and knocked down some free throws."
Bell County (18-10) won the game at the free-throw line, hitting 25 of 34 compared with four of 18 for Middlesboro.
"Getting to the free-throw line helped us on defense, because we changed our defenses a lot, and that helped us get set up," Teague said. "We threw some different things at them and got some turnovers in key situations."
Freshman Maci Morris led Bell County with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
No. 15 Sacred Heart 59, Atherton 23 (27th): The Valkyries raced out to a 21-6 lead and cruised to a win at Seneca. DaiJia Ruffin led Sacred Heart with 12 points and six rebounds. Raven Merriweather had 11 points, five rebounds and seven steals.
Seneca 71, Waggener 61 (27th): Kearra Pennie scored 22 points to go with seven rebounds and five blocks in the Lady Redhawks' win at home. Niya Anderson added 16 points and five assists.
Clark Co. 46, Bourbon Co. 41 (40th): Freshman Paige Taylor scored a team-high 11 points for the visiting Lady Cardinals.
Mercer Co. 60, East Jessamine 21 (36th): The host Titans jumped out to a 16-2 lead and went on to rout the Jaguars. Savannah Taylor had 17 points for Mercer County.
Burgin 53, West Jessamine 39 (36th): The Lady Colts jumped out to a 12-6 lead before Burgin took control at Mercer County. Shavon Majors had 17 points for the Bulldogs.
No. 18 Green Co. 71, Caverna 36 (18th): Micah Jones scored 29 points, and Kayla Bale had 19 for the host Dragons.
Owsley Co. 59, Lee Co. 40 (56th): Senior forward Peyton Wright had 24 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks in the Owls' win at Powell County.
Casey Co. 46, Somerset 44 (47th): Jasmine Johnson was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and finished with 16 points in the Lady Rebels' win at Rockcastle County.
Harrison Co. 56, Pendleton Co. 49 (38th): Emalee Little scored a game-high 21 points in the Fillies' victory at Nicholas County.

Harlan Co. 81, Harlan 45 (52nd): The Black Bears jumped out to a 22-6 lead and rolled to victory at home. Tyler Brewer led Harlan County with 23 points, and Alex Sergent scored 15, including four three-pointers.
No. 23 Simon Kenton 89, Williamstown 63 (32nd): Andrew Sampson and Cody Chambers scored 20 and 19 points, respectively, to lead the Pioneers past the Demons at Grant County. Williamstown's David Jump scored all 15 of his points on three-pointers.
Powell Co. 77, Owsley Co. 57 (56th): Trey Marcum was 7-for-12 from three-point range and finished with 21 points in the host Pirates' win. Zach Dennis added 13 points and 10 boards.
