High school district basketball highlights: Phelps boys surprise in first round, Feb. 23

Senior guard Dakota Smith hit four three-point shots in the final minute of play, including one at the buzzer, to lift host Phelps past Pike County Central 54-52 in a 60th District first-round basketball game Wednesday.

Smith finished with a game-high 21 points as Phelps advances despite a 9-21 record.

Madison Southern 72, Model 63 (OT) (44th): Taylor Abshear poured in 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the first round to lead Madison Southern, which pulled away from a 61-61 tie with a 9-0 run in overtime.

Southern's Damien Harris, who had 10 points, hit the second of two free throws with one second left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Model got 15 points from Wayne Morris.

Pineville 66, Barbourville 65 (51st): John Simpson, a 6-4 junior center, scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Pineville past Barbourville. Junior Byron Asher hit two free throws to give Pineville (11-7) the lead with 28 seconds left.

Barbourville (22-5) had two shots to win the elimination game but didn't sink them. Tanner Broughton and Steven Rudd each had 16 points for the losers.

Sheldon Clark 53, Paintsville 46 (57th): Sophomore Justin Johnson scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots as Sheldon Clark won the semifinal in Paintsville. Chase Parsley had 10 assists for the winners, now 25-6.

Lincoln County 48, Danville 42 (45th): Junior forward Luke Hill had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Lincoln County to its 19th win.

Tryston Ford scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Danville.

Grant County 55, Walton-Verona 50 (32nd): Senior guard Trevor Hunt had 21 points and 10 rebounds for host Grant County in the first-round game. Senior Mario Coleman pulled down 18 rebounds.

Walton-Verona, which finished 18-12, got 13 points and 13 rebounds from Daniel Helton.

Girls

Madison Southern 61, Model 53 (44th): Guard Jordan Renner scored 23 points as Madison Southern held Model to one point in the first quarter and advanced to a regional berth.

In their dismal first quarter, the Patriots missed all 11 of their shots from the field and turned the ball over six times.

Tara Hill led Model with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Montgomery County 49, Clark County 41 (40th): Freshman guard Erica Rogers led the way in the title game with 13 points for visiting Montgomery County (26-6).

No. 15 Sacred Heart 75, Seneca 39 (27th): DaiJia Ruffin scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Sacred Heart to the district title.

The Valkyries hit 48 percent of their shots and forced 33 turnovers, resulting in 52 points. Twelve different players scored for the winners.

Kearra Pennie grabbed 17 of Seneca's 31 rebounds.

Lincoln County 50, Boyle County 34 (45th): Emily Fox scored 21 points to lead Lincoln County to its 20th win.

Woodford County 49, Frankfort 44 (41st): Woodford got its 20th win of the season while ending Frankfort's season at 20-5.

Catie Fletcher led the Yellowjackets with 16 points. Freshman Chelsey Ford had 10 points and 16 rebounds. Shelby McDonald had 12 points, eight on free throws, including two with 10 seconds left to put the game away.
