Two people died as a result of a fire at a mobile home in Leslie County early Monday, authorities said. The victims were Ernest Smallwood, 58, and Lisa Gray, 32.

A neighbor in the Bear Branch community saw the fire at Smallwood's house about 3 a.m. and alerted Smallwood's son, who lived next door to him, said Jimmy Darrell Couch, a deputy coroner in Leslie County.

When the son forced open the locked door of the trailer, he saw his father lying at the doorway and pulled him out, Couch said.

Smallwood was pronounced dead at Mary Breckinridge Hospital in Hyden. Gray was badly burned and died in the mobile home.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the fire Monday.
