'Kentucky Cares' phonebank scheduled for tornado relief

The owner of Moberly's Country Store at East Bernstadt used a 5-gallon jug to collect donations for victims of the tornado, which hit nearby.

On Friday, as the UK basketball team begins play in the SEC tournament, the American Red Cross will join forces with WKYT-TV, the Lexington-Herald Leader, Clear Channel Radio, IMG Sports Marketing and Central Bank to host a "Kentucky Cares" tornado relief phonebank on WKYT.

From 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, volunteers will be answering phones taking donations at WKYT. Coach Matthew Mitchell and members of the UK womens team, Coach Donnie Tyndall and members of the Morehead State University Basketball team and Coach Brian Lane and members of the Transylvania University Basketball Team will also be answering phones.

The Kentucky Cares Campaign was set up to assist people affected by Friday's storms.

Those who wish to give to the fund can also use one of these options

  • Text Redcross to 90999.
  • Go to Redcross.org and give to the Disaster Relief Fund.
  • Drop a check off at any Central Bank location.
  • Mail a check to 1450 Newtown Pike, Lexington, Ky. 40511, with Kentucky Cares in the memo line.
