Kentucky's Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist receive multiple honors

University of Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis was named 2012 College Basketball Player of the Year by the Sporting News on Tuesday.

Davis is only the second Kentucky freshman to receive one of the national Player of the Year awards in program history. John Wall received three national player of the year honors in 2010 from Rivals.com, Yahoo Sports and The Rupp Trophy.

Davis helped lead Kentucky to a 30-1 record, including a 16-0 mark in the Southeastern Conference. The Wildcats open play in the SEC Tournament in New Orleans on Friday.

Joining Davis on the Sporting News' list of first-team All-Americans were Isaiah Canaan of Murray State, Draymond Green of Michigan State, Thomas Robinson of Kansas and Jared Sullinger of Ohio State.

Kentucky freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was named to the second team along with Marcus Denmon of Missouri, Jae Crowder of Marquette, Doug McDermott of Creighton and Tyler Zeller of North Carolina.

Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist — the only freshmen to be named to the first, second or third teams — were also named to the Sporting News' All-Freshman Team, along with Austin Rivers of Duke, Tony Wroten of Washington and Cody Zeller of Indiana.

Kansas' Bill Self was named Coach of the Year.

The Sporting News named Kentucky's John Calipari its SEC Coach of the Year. Davis won SEC player and freshman of the year.

Davis leads Kentucky with 14 double-doubles and averages 14.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. His 146 blocked shots broke the UK and SEC single-season records for freshmen.

Davis leads the nation in blocks per game (4.7) and ranks second in field-goal percentage (.661).

Kidd-Gilchrist averages 11.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist among Wooden finalists

Kentucky freshmen Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist were among 15 finalists name Tuesday for the John R. Wooden Award.

The Wooden Award All-American Teams will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wooden Award winner will be announced Final Four weekend in New Orleans.

Duke's Austin Rivers was the only other freshman among the finalists.

Sophomores named were Ohio State's Jared Sullinger and Creighton's Doug McDermott.

Juniors included Isaiah Canaan of Murray State, Damian Lillard of Weber State and Thomas Robinson of Kansas.

Seniors were Jae Crowder of Marquette, Marcus Denmon of Missouri, Draymond Green of Michigan State, Kevin Jones of West Virginia, Kris Joseph of Syracuse, Scott Machado of Iona and Tyler Zeller of North Carolina.
