Fast Break: Cats shine brightest when heat is on

March 17, 2012

Talking points

The KFC Yum Center was buzzing with Wildcats fans and this one started with a flurry. The Cats came out roaring but Royce White gave UK fits. UK hit three early three-pointers, Terrence Jones and Darius Miller sparked a 10-0 UK run and it was 23-11. Iowa State forced UK to take jumpers and chipped away at the lead. Marquis Teague scored six straight points, and a 30-26 UK lead became 38-27 at the half. That didn't last long when White began to dominate. It was quickly 42-42. Anthony Davis went to work on defense, Miller on offense to ignite an 18-2 run. The Cats hit a flurry of threes to pull away.

Telling numbers

■ UK outshot a team known for its outside weapons. It had four three-pointers before Iowa State made one. For the game UK was 10-for-20; Iowa State 3-for-22.

■ Maybe some rest will get Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on track. His only field goal came in the final seconds.

■ Doron Lamb picked up his fourth foul with 13:49 to go and UK led only 48-44. Panic? UK scored 17 of the next 19 points.

Thumbs up

■ UK is young but when it seemed this team was about to be tested on the big stage, it put on a clinic.

■ A fired-up Miller was lights out. Bottle this one up.

■ Iowa State tried to make Teague beat them. He answered with 24 points, seven assists and two turnovers.

Thumbs down

■ John Calipari warned all year that teams would get physical with UK. At times it looked like White himself backed them down. But can't that happen with freshmen?
