Freshman Anthony Davis on Saturday became the first University of Kentucky basketball player ever to win the John R. Wooden Award for National Player of the Year.

Davis is also the first player ever from the Southeastern Conference to win the 36-year-old honor.

Voting was conducted by hundreds of national college basketball media who selected and ranked 10 players.

Davis had 3,350 points, outdistancing second-place finisher Thomas Robinson of Kansas (3,017). Rounding out the top five were Draymond Green of Michigan State (2,825), Ohio State's Jared Sullinger (2,425), and Tyler Zeller of North Carolina (1,793).

The 10-player Wooden All- America team also included, in alphabetical order, Murray State's Isaiah Canaan, Marquette's Jae Crowder, Missouri's Marcus Denmon, West Virginia's Kevin Jones and Creighton's Doug McDermott.

Heading into Saturday's Final Four showdown against Louisville, Davis was averaging a team-leading 14.3 points and 10.1 rebounds while leading the Wildcats to a 36-2 record. He had blocked an SEC-record 175 shots.

Davis was named Associated Press Player of the Year on Friday and last week won the Adolph Rupp Trophy as the nation's best player.
