City offers options to help minimize traffic disruptions during Rupp celebration

Published: April 3, 2012

Lexington leaders warned of possible parking problems as preparations are made for a crowd of 10,000 or more to attend a rally at Rupp Arena Tuesday to celebrate Kentucky's eighth national title.

The rally is scheduled for about 3:30 p.m., shortly after the team is expected to arrive at Lexington's Blue Grass Airport. Rupp doors open at 2 p.m.

Finding parking could be a challenge for those wanting to attend because downtown workers will likely fill up spaces near Rupp during the day, Lexington's traffic signal systems manager, Steve Cummins, said in a written release.

The crowd exiting Rupp after the event also is likely to complicate the nightly rush hour.

The city recommended fans arrive early for the Rupp event. Lexington Center lots will open at 1 p.m. with about 5,000 available parking spaces.

Attendees also can park farther away and take a bus to Rupp Arena. Call LexTran at 253-4636 for more information or visit www.lextran.com.

Those coming from campus were urged to walk or take the bus and downtown workers were urged to leave early or later than normal to avoid rush hour.
