Lexington distillery releases rum

Published: April 12, 2012

Barrel House Distilling Co. in Lexington has bottled and is selling a spirit called Oak Rum, which is aged in bourbon barrels.

The 105.2-proof rum was distilled in 2008; it is available in Kentucky and Illinois, and online at Barrelhousedistillery.com. The rum, which is a sipping rum, won best in category at the American Distillers' Institute Competition last week, company officials said.

Barrel House will sell the first 50 bottles, signed and numbered, for $50 to $200 at the distillery on Manchester Street. A portion of the proceeds will go to Horse Aid Live, which promotes humane treatment of horses with grants to non-profits that retain, rehabilitate, retire or shelter unwanted homeless horses.
