Ex-Cat Meyer to pitch in Lexington on Friday; Legends beat Tourists

Former University of Kentucky pitcher Alex Meyer, a first-round draft pick of the Washington Nationals in 2011, will return to Lexington this weekend as a member of the Class A Hagerstown Suns.

Meyer is scheduled to start Friday night's game for Hagerstown against the Lexington Legends at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The Legends will counter with Nick Tropeano, who has twice been named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week in 2012.

Game time is 7:05 p.m.

As a junior at UK in 2011, Meyer, a 6-foot-9 right-hander, led the Southeastern Conference in strikeouts with 110.

Meyer is 2-3 with a 4.28 ERA for the Suns. He has 33 strikeouts and 12 walks in 271⁄3 innings. He pitched seven innings, gave up one run four hits and had six strikeouts in his most recent outing, a win against Augusta.

Legends 2, Tourists 1

The Legends scored two runs in the top of the third inning and overcame three errors to defeat the Asheville Tourists 2-1 Tuesday at Asheville, N.C.

Asheville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Brian Humphries scored on an error by Lexington second baseman Delino DeShields Jr.

Lexington didn't waste any time taking the lead, though. John Hinson led off the third inning with a single and moved to third on groundouts by Roberto Pena and Chris Epps. DeShields struck out but a passed ball by catcher William Swanner allowed Hinson to score and DeShields to reach first base. Jordan Scott hit a double to right field to score DeShields for the decisive run.

Luis Cruz (2-1) pitched six innings to earn the victory. Jason Chowning pitched the ninth for his his fifth save.
