Buddy's, closed since October, will become the site of a restaurant serving artisanal pub food and beer brewed in Central Kentucky.

The former site of Buddy's Bar and Grill will serve Central Kentucky-produced beer and artisanal pub food when a new restaurant opens there later this year.

Bob Douglas, one of the partners behind the as-yet-unnamed bar and restaurant, said he and his partners are working out details of what they plan to do with the building, at Euclid Avenue and High Street.

Douglas said firmer plans for the new restaurant will be ready in three to four weeks.

Microbrewed beer will be served at the casual restaurant, but where the beer will be produced "is up in the air at the moment," Douglas said. "We had initially planned to have one in Lexington itself, but we may have a better opportunity outside of Lexington."

Buddy's closed in October after the building's owner said the restaurant management, which had changed in 2009, owed substantial back rent. The building had hosted Roy's East High Diner from 2001 to 2002.

The Saratoga, a fixture in the Chevy Chase area, had long done business at the site before a newer set of buildings was constructed.

Said Douglas: "We're trying to make it a more comfortable local hangout, opening it up more. ... You can feel comfortable and watch a sporting event, listen to music, just hang out."

Craft beer in Lexington is having a good 2012. West Sixth Brewing Co., a craft brewery, recently opened a tap room and beer production plant in the former Rainbo bakery at Jefferson and West Sixth streets.
