PADUCAH — Murray State broke open a 3-3 game with a bases-clearing double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held off No. 2 Kentucky for a 7-3 win Tuesday night.

Paul Ritzheimer doubled down the right-field line off reliever Alex Phillips as Kentucky (41-12) suffered just its third loss of the year in non-conference play.

Murray State used seven pitchers in the game, a different hurler in the first six innings, including all three of its weekend starters, for the win in front of a packed 1,379 house at Brooks Stadium. Will Handlin (5-3) pitched the last two innings and got the win.

Luke Maile hit his team-leading 12th homer of the season, a two-run shot for UK in the fourth inning.

UK freshman starter Chandler Shepherd worked 42⁄3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs — two earned — walking three and striking out one.

The Wildcats got eight hits in the game, led by a career-high three hits from Michael Williams.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, a single and two walks loaded the bases before Ritzheimer's double. Mike Koslowski then singled in the last run for Murray State, now 23-30.

The Racers got three hits from Brandon Eggenschwiler.
