SEC teams Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas all advance

June 4, 2012

Mike Zunino and Daniel Pigott drove in four runs apiece, and top-seeded Florida beat Georgia Tech 15-3 to win the Gainesville, Fla., Regional on Sunday.

The Gators (45-18) advanced to the NCAA Tournament's super regionals for the fourth consecutive year. They will host Vanderbilt or North Carolina State.

Florida made getting there look easy, scoring four runs in the first, three in the second and really pulling away with a seven-run fifth. Zunino had a three-run homer in the second and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Pigott had a two-run double in the first and a two-run single in the fifth.

Brian Johnson (8-4) allowed three hits and a run in five innings for the win. Jake Davies (1-4) gave up seven runs, six earned, in two innings.

Florida dominated the regional, getting a no-hitter in the opener and allowing five runs in two wins against the Yellow Jackets. Twelve of Florida's 28 hits went for extra bases, and the team's ERA was a measly 1.67.

"Things are starting to go the right way now," Zunino said. "We're getting good starts, the bats are coming around, we're getting some timely hits, our pen's been great and our defense is playing amazing. It's a good feeling and I hope we can carry it one from here on out."

South Carolina 4, Clemson 3: Adam Matthews' RBI single keyed a three-run first inning, and Jordan Montgomery held Clemson to five hits in nearly seven innings as two-time defending national champion South Carolina won its 19th straight NCAA Tournament game, wrapping up the Columbia, S.C., Regional.

Not that it was easy. The rival Tigers cut it to 4-3 in the ninth and had the winning run at the plate. But Brad Felder flied out to the warning track to end the game.

Arkansas 5, Sam Houston St. 1: Four Arkansas pitchers combined to limit Sam Houston State to one run and the Razorbacks won the Houston Regional. Nolan Sanburn (4-1) threw 22⁄3 hitless innings with three strikeouts in relief of Randall Fant, who threw 41⁄3 scoreless innings.

TCU 5, Mississippi 2: TCU won to force a game Monday night to decide which program will advance to a super regional. The Horned Frogs have won three consecutive games after dropping their regional opener against the Rebels.

Samford 3, Mississippi St. 2: Brandon Miller scored twice and drove in another run as Samford eliminated Mississippi State in Tallahassee, Fla. Host Florida State later eliminated Samford with a 5-2 win.

Louisville 11, Missouri 3: Ty Young was 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBI to help the Cardinals avoid elimination in the Tucson, Ariz., Regional. The Cardinals played Arizona late Sunday night and needed a win to force a Monday night elimination game against the Wildcats.

Adam Engel, Nick Ratajczak, Alex Chittenden and Kyle Gibson had three hits apiece. Matt Koch pitched 42⁄3 scoreless innings of relief for the victory.
