Prosecutor says he expects change in charges in Bunch case

Published: July 13, 2012

Days after former state lawmaker and teacher Dewayne Bunch's death, Commonwealth's Attorney Allen Trimble said he expects the charges against the two teens involved in the fight that critically injured Bunch last year to be changed.

Bunch suffered a severe head injury fifteen months ago while trying to break up a fight against two boys at Whitley County High School in Williamsburg, where he was a teacher.

"In cases such as this, when death occurs during the legal process, it changes the nature of the charges," said Trimble, who prosecutes cases in Whitley County.

The teens were charged with one count each of first-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault. Trimble would not comment directly on the status of the boys' charges because they were juvenile cases.
