Mike Haydon, the chief of staff for Gov. Steve Beshear, died Sunday.

FRANKFORT — A memorial service will be held Wednesday afternoon in the state Capitol for Mike Haydon, Gov. Steve Beshear's chief-of-staff, who died unexpectedly Sunday at his home.

Haydon, who spent more than 30 years in public service, reportedly died of a heart attack. He was 62.

Beshear said he felt it was appropriate for Haydon's memorial service to be held in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort. Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. and the memorial service will start at 3:30 p.m.

"This was truly his home away from home, and there are many people who will want to pay their respects to our good friend," Beshear said in a statement. "We miss him terribly already."

Another visitation will be held at Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home at 221 East Main Street in Springfield from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Dominic Church in Springfield. Beshear's office said friends and family are encouraged to attend the visitation on Thursday because St. Dominic is a small church.

Haydon, was appointed chief-of-staff in 2010. He previously served as legislative liaison for Beshear. A former mayor of Springfield, Haydon had worked in all aspects of state government beginning in Gov. Brereton Jones' administration. He also served as chief-of-staff for Democratic House Majority Leader Rep. Rocky Adkins of Sandy Hook and as property valuation administrator for Washington County.

Haydon is survived by his wife Lisa and three children.
