N.Y. harness track to buy interest in Kentucky's Ellis Park

Published: August 14, 2012

A New York harness track and casino has applied for regulatory approval to buy an interest in Ellis Park, the Thoroughbred track in Henderson.

Saratoga Harness Racing Inc. filed paperwork with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on July 2; James Hartman, executive vice president, chief operating officer and general manager, said the application is likely to be considered at the September commission meeting.

According to the change of ownership, "decision making authority will be shared with the present owner, Ron Geary."

The exact ownership stake has not been disclosed.

Hartman said plans were still in place for Ellis to put in instant racing terminals. Saratoga's harness track has 1,800 video lottery terminals, which generated $150 million in "win" revenue in 2011.
