UK commit Heady named to USA Baseball U18 national team

August 22, 2012

Connor Heady, a senior at North Oldham High School who has committed to the University of Kentucky, has been name to the USA Baseball 18-and-under national team after a rigorous series of tryouts.

USA Baseball announced its final 20-player roster Tuesday night. The team will play in the 2012 IBAF 18U/AAA World Championships to be held Aug. 30-Sept. 8 in Seoul, South Korea.

Heady, a 6-foot, 165-pound infielder and right-handed pitcher, is the only Kentuckian on the roster.

To make the squad, Heady survived an initial cut of 40 players from 144 athletes competing over five days at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Those 40 players then took part in a series of scrimmages and games in Durham, N.C., after which the roster was trimmed to 28.

The remaining 28 were invited to the final phase of trials Friday through Wednesday in California, after which the group was cut to 20.
