A trio of Kentuckians will have speaking spots during the abbreviated Republican National Convention this week in Tampa, despite the delays caused by Hurricane Isaac.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul are tentatively scheduled to speak Wednesday evening during prime-time viewing. McConnell is scheduled to address the convention between 7 and 8 p.m. Paul will speak after McConnell, according to information provided by the convention.
Andy Barr, who is challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler in the 6th Congressional District race, is tentatively scheduled to speak at 3:24 p.m. Tuesday, Barr's campaign said Monday.
Barr, a Lexington lawyer, had been scheduled to speak Monday night before the convention was delayed a day because of Isaac. David Host, a spokesman for Barr's campaign, said Barr's speaking time is in flux.
The convention is expected to begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday and will go late into the evening. C-SPAN will have live coverage of the three-day event on its convention Web site, C-span.org/RNC.
Scott Jennings, one of Kentucky's 44 delegates to the convention, said the more than 4,000 delegates and alternates spent much of Monday in meetings. Jennings also is running Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's Ohio campaign.
Despite the soggy, blustery weather, Jennings said most delegates were upbeat Monday.
"Mostly people are just hanging out and talking to each other," Jennings said of the atmosphere in Tampa. "People are very optimistic and people are very bullish on Romney and Ryan."
