Lexington police were trying to unravel the events surrounding a shooting and assault that sent two people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting victim, whom police did not identify, appeared to have been shot twice in the back. The shooting occurred in the driveway of 133 12th Street, off North Broadway near Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, Lt. Roger Holland said.

Witnesses told police they heard two gunshots and heard the man screaming about 2:20 p.m. A group of people then fled from the home's front yard.

One person ran toward the back of the property, hopping fences and running through yards of neighboring homes. At least two others got into a waiting car and drove toward North Broadway.

A short time later, police handcuffed a man in the front yard of a home on North Limestone, about two blocks away, who was thought to be the person who ran away. Holland said police initially thought he was a suspect, but he had injuries consistent with being assaulted.

"It appears he may have been a victim as well," Holland said.

Both the shooting victim and the assault victim were taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. The man with the bullet wounds was taken into emergency surgery Wednesday afternoon.

Neighbor Stephen Andrews said he heard the shots and saw two men hop in a car and drive off. After the shooting, the victim stood up and walked around, he said.

"He just milled around up and down the street, back and forth, wiping blood," he said.

Andrews said he didn't recognize the victim.

Police did not have a good description of the men who drove away, or their car. Almost every witness officers spoke with described the car as a different color, and it was unclear which direction the car headed when it reached North Broadway, Holland said.

Police were at the scene for a couple of hours after the shooting collecting bags of evidence from inside the house, which appeared to be a duplex, and from a Chevy Tahoe parked in the driveway. A police dog followed a scent through the neighborhood.

"Right now, we're just trying to piece together what happened," Holland said.
