The popularity of a History channel miniseries about the bloody feud between the Hatfield and McCoy families has resulted in a Hatfield McCoy geocaching trail that opens Saturday and encompasses the mountains of Kentucky and West Virginia.

The Hatfield McCoy Geo Trail will allow people to explore 15 historic locations around Pike County in Kentucky and Mingo and Logan counties in West Virginia, and retrace the steps of those who took part in the Hatfield and McCoy feud in the 1800s, said Kelly Moore, a trail organizer from Pike County.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, a kickoff event will be at the Williamson Coal House on Second Avenue in Williamson, W.Va. On Friday night, a reservation-only pig roast will be at the Linkous House Bed and Breakfast in Williamson.

Geocaching, said Moore, is simply "a high-tech treasure-hunting game using" a handheld GPS or a GPS-enabled smartphone. People must have one of the devices to participate, Moore said.

On Saturday, each geocache will contain a stamp that participants may collect and enter on a brochure available at the Coal House.

Finders who log the completion of all 15 caches Saturday will receive a special-edition Hatfield and McCoy GeoTrail coin, Moore said.
