Narnia Save Me

If you listen to any of the “top ten” FM radio stations perhaps you have heard this little ditty:

Take it off, lay down on your back, just relax, I'm gonna stoke stoke your body 'till it collapse… (From YG’s Relax)

Or maybe this popular summertime tune:

Sex, on the beach

We don't mind sand in our Stilettos
We freak In my Jeep
Snoop Doggy Dogg on the stereo…
(From Katy Perry’s California Girls)

Or this catchy new jingle:

Go girl you can twerk it
Let me see you whistle while you work it
I'mma lay it back, don't stop it
'Cause I love it how you drop it, drop it, drop it on me
Now, Shawty let that whistle blow
Yeah, baby let that whistle blow…
(From Flo Rida’s Blow My Whistle)

On any given day these wonderful lyrics flow forth from my car stereo with no PG warnings as my ten year old surfs for something fun to listen too.  Needless to say I am sick and tired of near-miss accidents as I maneuver to change the channel before she loses any last vestige of her innocence. If my older daughters are with me, they often save me – and more importantly their sister - with their name-that-tune super skills. Within two notes, they yell, “Mom this is not appropriate,” as they lunge for the tuner knob.

But, once and for all, I want peace back in my car. So I am getting out the big guns.

Yes that’s right. The Narnia CD’s.

I discovered these audio theatre CDs when my older girls were in elementary school. We would listen to them every day in the car on the way to school. As they disembarked at the entrance they would look at me and sternly state, “Do not listen ahead Mom!” Of course, as soon as I exited the school driveway I was once again lost in the land of Narnia. Then I would have to find my way back to the part of the CD we had been listening to when I dropped them off so they would never know my dirty deed.

Created in partnership with Focus on the Family, this critically acclaimed full audio theatre production of C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia is truly amazing.  Unlike an audio book, which are also enjoyable, this production includes a full cast of renowned British actors, sound effects and full musical score. My oldest daughter, our drama queen, loved them so much she used them to lull her to sleep for years. Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised, albeit a bit nostalgic, when I discovered she had not taken them with her to college this fall.

She probably knew deep down I would need them. When the audio porn invaded my car and I had to resort to something more palatable than Katy Perry or Flo Rida.
