Business awards: Commerce Lexington announces Salute to Small Business category winners

Commerce Lexington has named the category winners of its 2012 Salute to Small Business awards. The overall winner will be announced during the Salute to Small Business awards luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Keeneland Entertainment Center.

The cost to attend the awards luncheon is $50 for Commerce Lexington members, $60 for non-members. To register, call (859) 226-1608.

Category winners are:

Business Success Award: Holifield Photography, Jim and Theresa Holifield, 171 Moore Drive.

This award recognizes a business for exceptional company operations, products and services, growth, response to adversity, and other unique aspects that set the business apart from its competition.

Innovation Award: Bates Security/Sonitrol of Lexington, Sonny and Pat Bates, 3166 Custer Drive.

This award recognizes companies that have demonstrated ability in adopting and utilizing technology to directly increase productivity, efficiency, revenue and/or profits.

Legacy Award: Lynn Imaging, John L. Lynn, 328 Old Vine Street.

This award is given to exceptional companies that have been in business for 25 years or more, multigenerational businesses, and/or past Salute to Small Business award winners.

Minority Business Award: Holiday Inn Express, Northeast, Manish Patel, 1780 Sharkey Way.

This award recognizes an outstanding minority-owned company for its exceptional products and services, growth, its response to adversity, and other unique aspects that set it apart from the competition.

Nonprofit Award: OWL, David Boggs, 650 Kennedy Road.

This award recognizes a non-profit organization that has shown significant impact and return on investment, the ability to inspire and engage volunteers, and ways to maximize its output and reach within the community.

Young Entrepreneur Award: J&H Lanmark — The Outdoors Store, George R. Lathram II, 189 Moore Drive.

This award recognizes an outstanding entrepreneur under the age of 35 for operating a small business for at least a three-year track record of success.

Jack R. Cunningham and Jeffrey L. Hallos, attorneys with Frost Brown Todd, will be in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in America, a peer review publication in the legal profession.

Cunningham was named "Lawyer of the Year" for Litigation — Trusts & Estates. Hallos was named "Lawyer of the Year" for Mergers & Acquisitions Law. He is chair of the firm's business department and has served as chair of the business combinations and capital transactions practice group.

Engineered Heating and Air has been awarded the Outstanding New Dealer award for 2011 from WaterFurnace, a leading manufacturer of geothermal and water source heat pumps.

Tom Rudd and Tom Robeson of Engineered Heating and Air received the award from Bob Peck, territory sales manager for WaterFurnace. Engineered Heating and Air is at 916 Floyd Drive. Phone: (859) 231-0505.

LG&E and KU Energy has been recognized as one of the top 10 utilities in the nation for economic development, according to Site Selection magazine.

The utility company previously was named to the Top 10 list in 1999, 2002 and 2003, and received honorable mentions in 2008 and 2009.

Some of the information that explains LG&E and KU's selection included the 54 new companies and 272 expansion projects that were announced in the state in 2011. Those projects resulted in more than 13,000 jobs and more than $2.6 billion in investment.
