Lexington woman dies in Morgan crash

September 26, 2012

A Lexington woman died Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Morgan County, Kentucky State Police said Wednesday.

Mabel Swafford, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene by Morgan County Coroner Raymond Vancleve, state police said in a news release.

Swafford was driving a 2004 Saturn Vue eastbound on the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway and was approaching a construction zone when she lost control on a curve and her car went into a westbound lane, state police said.

Her car was struck in the passenger side by a westbound 1998 Dodge Ram truck driven by Tyler Shepherd, 21, of Salyersville. Both vehicles came to a stop in the eastbound lane. Shepherd was taken to Morgan County ARH Hospital in West Liberty for treatment of injuries that weren't life-threatening.

The crash was reported just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday near mile marker 63 at the Morgan-Magoffin County line.

Swafford was not wearing a seat belt, but Shepherd was, state police said.
