A Nicholasville man was charged with second-degree animal cruelty after his mixed-breed chihuahua was found injured in a trash bin last week, according to a news release Monday from Jessamine County Animal Care and Control.

Franklin May came to the Jessamine County Animal Shelter claiming to own the female chihuahua. Animal Care and Control verified that May was the owner. Second-degree animal cruelty is a class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $500 fine.

May has since surrendered all ownership rights to the dog, named Sable. The dog is in the care of a veterinarian for a severe infection and is expected to recover.

However, the bills are expected to be substantial. If anyone wishes to make a donation to assist with her care, they may send donations to the Jessamine County Animal Care and Control, 120 Fairground Way, Nicholasville, Ky. 40356.

Sable will be available for adoption as soon as the veterinarian is sure she has fully recovered.
