Lex-Care: Utility, rent help needed

October 2, 2012

Two cases were received at Lex-Care this week. The first requests assistance to reinstate electric service while the other seeks to pay past-due rent.

Melissa Arnett, a case manager at UK Targeted Assessment Program, is working with a mother who is going through a divorce and needs $396.20 to clear a past-due electric bill and have service restored.

Once the bill is paid, she will be able to maintain her household on her earnings and the child support she receives.

Shannon Gordon, a social worker at the Senior Citizen's Center, is assisting a married man and Vietnam veteran who needs $800 to pay his rent.

He has had to stop working to care for his wife who suffers from cerebral palsy and other medical problems that are worsening.

Due to the loss of his income and the increased cost of his wife's medicine, he has fallen behind on the rent.

The couple receives Social Security benefits and have applied for food stamps. Medicaid and Medicare Part D will help cover the cost of her medicines. Once those benefits are in place and the past-due rent is paid, the family will be able to manage.
