London woman is charged with abandoning children

October 4, 2012

A London woman is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning on charges of abandonment of a minor and public intoxication, according to the Laurel County jail Web site.

Joyce Ann Blanton, 35, of Cornett Subdivision Road was being held in the jail late Wednesday night, according to a news release from the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrested Blanton after receiving a complaint to check on some children at 9 p.m. When they arrived at the address where the children lived, deputies checked with neighbors and learned the children were two houses away.

The people there said the children had been with them since 3:45 p.m. but did not know where the mother was. Deputies later found the mother two homes away, and deputies determined she was under the influence.

The children were released to the custody of a grandmother.

Blanton was in jail Thursday night in lieu of a $10,000 cash bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Laurel District Court.
