The Lexington-Fayette County Board of Adjustment voted 5-2 Friday to approve a conditional use permit for an extended-stay hotel in the Zandale neighborhood near Trader Joe's.

However, before the Home 2 Suites by Hilton can be built, the city's Planning Commission must approve its development plans, said Bill Sallee, Division of Planning manager.

Residents and members of the Zandale Neighborhood association have opposed the project as a bad fit for the neighborhood of mostly homes and medical offices.

The developer, Cohen Realty LLC, agreed during a two-hour discussion at Friday's board meeting to compromises, including an 8-foot privacy fence. Also, they agreed to spare two large bur oak trees.

Barry Stumbo, Kathryn Moore, Joe Smith, Noel White and Thomas Glover voted in favor; James Griggs and Janice Meyer were opposed, Sallee said.
