Two 20-year-old men were hit by a train and killed Sunday evening in McCreary County, Sheriff Gus Skinner said.

The men's names were not released Sunday.

The men were walking on the tracks at Whitley City, near the county jail, about 7:30 p.m. Sunday when they were hit by a southbound Norfolk Southern train, Skinner said.

The train hit the men near a split in the tracks. It's possible the victims did not realize which track the train would be on, Skinner said.

The men apparently were hit from behind, Skinner said.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the accident, Skinner said.
