The suspect in a fatal shooting outside a Lexington nursing home pleaded not guilty Monday.

Maurice Ward Jr., 22, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Anthoney Carol Beaumont Jr., 31. Beaumont was shot in the parking lot of Northpoint/Lexington Healthcare Center on Trent Boulevard on Oct. 2.

Witnesses told police Beaumont was fighting with another man when Ward pulled out a handgun and shot Beaumont multiple times, according to an arrest warrant filed in Fayette County District Court.

Witnesses identified Ward through a six-person photo lineup, the warrant said.

Police said Ward fled to Memphis after the shooting. He was arrested there Oct. 16 and signed a waiver of extradition the same day, according to court documents.

He was brought back to Lexington on Friday and arraigned Monday. His next court date was scheduled for Nov. 5.
