Flurry of morning crashes keeping Lexington police busy

Lexington police worked at least seven wrecks Wednesday morning, including several involving injuries.

Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said the most serious injury crashes were on inbound Athens-Boonesboro Road at Interstate 75, and on I-75 at the 113-mile marker near Paris Pike. One driver was in critical condition after the Athens accident, police said.

Injury accidents also were reported at Bowman Mill and Parkers Mill roads, and at Parkers Mill and Cross Keys roads, Roberts said.

"We've got them all over," Roberts said.

Meanwhile, non-injury crashes kept officers busy at Russell Cave and Huffman Mill roads, Meadow Lane and East Loudon Avenue, and Clays Mill Road and Cecil Way.

Roberts attributed the rash of wrecks to slippery conditions from Tuesday's rains and motorists' overconfidence.

"This seems to happen every year the first time we have a big cold, slippery rain," Roberts said. "People have to get acclimated and be reminded that they need to slow down and be extra cautious when you're dealing with this kind of weather."

In the Athens-Boonesboro crash, Naomi L. Hetrick of Richmond, the driver of a white 1991 Toyota Corolla station wagon, was making a left turn from Recreation Drive onto Athens when she pulled in front of a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Michelle L. Torrez of Lexington, police said.

Hetrick was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, police said. Torrez suffered minor injuries.
