The movie Lincoln, in which Sally Field plays the president's wife, opens Friday in limited release and on Nov. 16 nationwide.

Actress Sally Field will appear in a segment of this weekend's CBS News Sunday Morning recorded in Lexington last month to promote her upcoming film Lincoln, in which she plays first lady and Lexington native Mary Todd Lincoln.

Field and correspondent Mo Rocca visited the Mary Todd Lincoln House on Main Street, the nation's first site restored to honor a first lady, to talk about Mary Todd Lincoln's legacy and the state of historic preservation.

It was Field's idea to visit Lexington for the CBS News feature.

"I kind of insisted in a way," Field told the Herald-Leader. "I really wanted to go and visit her home and a few other places because ... I think it's important that we as a country respect our own history and preserve it. I wanted to bring her home in the public awareness.

"I know it's hard for these places to really keep them alive and keep them for posterity. Progress, the way we are, you'd want to bulldoze it under and put in another parking lot. I wanted to talk from my own perspective that it's important that it be there, that you could sort of walk around and feel Mary Todd's history."

Field diligently researched the role, including a visit last year to Lexington in which she first saw the Mary Todd Lincoln home. Her performance is generating serious Oscar buzz.

The film, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president and Kentucky native, opens Friday in limited release and Nov. 16 nationwide.

CBS News Sunday Morning airs 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday on CBS.

Field, 66, is one of Hollywood's most honored actresses. She won the Academy Award for best actress twice, for Norma Rae in 1979 and for Places in the Heart in 1985.
