LexCare: Mortgage help needed

November 21, 2012

Nicole Crangle, a case manager at Lexington Fair Housing, submitted the this case to Lex-Care this week.

Her client is a married man who needs $500 to pay his mortgage.

He has worked for 12 years as a truck driver. His wife is disabled and requires around-the-clock care. The couple's 20-year-old son is his mother's caretaker, with assistance from the husband when he is at home.

Several weeks ago the husband began having health problems that caused him to be unable to work and he was laid off. During that time he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He is receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments. The side effects make him unable to assist in caring for his wife.

The family's income is from the wife's Social Security disability benefits and the husband's short-term disability benefits. The husband hopes to be able to return to work. If not, he will apply for Social Security disability benefits.
